I think I was possibly the only person on the face of the earth that hadn't seen Lady Gaga's video for 'Telephone', so I decided that I was done being left out of the loop. After I finished watching it, I realized I hadn't seen any of her other videos either, even though I'm particularly fond of her music. Thus began the thirty minutes of my life I wish I had never wasted. I was disappointed, but not overly shocked by anything I saw, until I watched the video for 'Alejandro'. I'm not easily shocked or offended by any stretch of the imagination, but my mouth was wide open by the end.
If you haven't seen the video, it starts off with Gaga leading a funeral procession, then Gaga dressed as a very provocative nun, which leads into several simulated sex scenes with women as the dominant partner (how scandalous!), and is followed up by her eating a rosary. To top everything off, she is wearing a suit with a cross precariously positioned over her crotch while several men toss her about and molest her. All of this is fine to me. I could care less, honestly.
What really gets to me is the fact that there is not a single sexy Hispanic man in the entire video! Not one. The entire video is set in the snow, located in something that resembles a military camp, where everyone is half naked and has a horrendous bowl cut. No sun, no beach, nothing even close to Mexico. The more I thought about it, the more it didn't make sense. Maybe there was some key word I missed in the lyrics, something I just didn't know that would explain why I was imagining sun kissed sexy men dancing around and everyone else was okay with whatever was going on in that video.
So I called a friend or three and we came to the general consensus that this was just another attempt to establish an avant-garde image in attempt to set herself apart from all of the other entertainers out there. Essentially, her plan worked. She is now becoming known for her outrageous costumes and videos, and not her music. This saddens me, because I really adore 'Alejandro' and because it's trashed my image of Lady Gaga. I wish I hadn't looked at those videos.
